MAINTENANCE, PREVENTIVE MEASURES AND LEGAL ISSUES 

PREVENTIVE MEASURES TO DATA LOSS

1. Use of antivirus software e.g Norton, McAfee, Avast, etc
2. Use of firewall: A firewall is a software utility or hardware device that acts as a filter for data entering or leaving a network or computer.
3. Exercising care in giving out vital and personal information
4. Proper network implementation and management
5. Exercising care in opening email attachments.
6. Ensure personal information  is not disclosed

7. Keep your system updated.

8. Do not download file attachment from unknown sources

9. Use Encryption :  method by which information is converted into secret code that hides the information's true meaning

LEGAL ISSUES IN COMPUTER SECURITY

The common computer security issues are:

1. Piracy

2. Cyber Crime

3. Identity Theft

4. Internet Fraud

5. Hacking

1. Piracy : The use and or distribution of copyrighted computer software in violation of the copyright laws or applicable license restrictions. Common forms include end user piracy, counterfeiting.

 2. Cyber Crime: This is criminal activity that either targets or uses a computer, a computer network or a networked device. Most cybercrime is committed by cybercriminals or hackers who want to make money.

3. Identity Theft: A crime in which an attacker uses fraud or deception to obtain personal or sensitive information from a victim and misuses it to act in the victim's name in order to get money.

4. Internet Fraud: This refers to any type of fraud scheme that uses email, web sites, chat rooms or message boards to present fraudulent solicitations to prospective victims, to conduct fraudulent transactions

5. Hacking: This is the act of compromising digital devices and networks by gaining unauthorized access to an account or computer system.

CLASS ACTIVITIES

1. State five (5) preventive measures to data loss

2. Write short notes on:

(a) Hacking

(b) Piracy

(c) Identity Theft

3. Scenario 1:

Situation: You're working on an important assignment the night before it's due. You accidentally delete the entire document. Panic sets in as you realize there's no backup.

Mental Questions:

  1. (a) Why is it important to regularly save and backup your work?
  2. (b) What could you have done differently to avoid this situation?
  3. (c) Can you think of any software features that automatically save your work or provide version history?
4. Scenario 2:
Situation:

Your computer gets infected by a virus, and important files become corrupted. You don't have an antivirus program installed.

Mental Questions:

  1. (a) Why is having antivirus software important for protecting your data?
  2. (b) How can you prevent virus attacks on your computer?
  3. (c) What are some signs that your computer might be infected with a virus?
