MEANING, TYPES AND MAINTENANCE

Objective: At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

(i) define the monitor

(ii) List and explain the types of monitor

(iii) State the maintenance of the monitor

MEANING OF MONITOR

A computer monitor is an output device that displays information in pictorial or textual form. It is also called Visual Display Unit (VDU) and it is similar to television screen. A monitor is the most common output device.

TYPES OF MONITOR

There are two types of computer monitor based on the color display. They are

(a) Monochrome Monitor

(b) Colour Monitor

(a) Monochrome monitor:


 A monochrome monitor has two colours, one for foreground and the other for background. The colours can be white, amber or green on a dark (black) background. They display charts, maps, diagrams and other pictures in just one colour.

(b) Colour Monitor:


 A colour monitor is a display peripheral that displays more than two colours.  It generates three colors of light (red, green, and blue) and the different colors we see are due to different combinations and intensitiesThese are:
(i) CGA (Colour Graphic Adapter) : can display only 16 colours
(ii) EGA (Enhanced Graphic Adapter) - Displays 64 colours
(iii) VGA (Video Graphics Adapter) - displays 262, 144 colours
(iv) SVGA ( Super Video Graphic Adapter) - displays 262, 144 colours
  LCD (liquid Crystal Display) and LED (Light emitting diode) monitors were developed because of the bulky nature of CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) Monitor

MAINTENANCE OF THE MONITOR

1. Turn off the monitor when not in use.
2. Keep in a ventilated area.
3. Use only a power source and connection appropriate for the monitor.
4. Do not use magnet on the monitor as it can cause permanent damage and distort the screen colour.
5. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the screen in circles.
