FILE SHARING (NETWORKING)
MEANING, TYPES OF FILE SHARING, MEANING OF NETWORK, BENEFITS AND DISADVANTAGES OF NETWORK
Specific objectives: By the end of this lesson, the students should be able to:
i. Define file sharing and computer network
ii. State the types of file sharing and network
iii. State benefits and disadvantages of network
MEANING OF FILE SHARING
File sharing is the public or private sharing of files or folders on a computer connected to a network. Files can easily be shared outside a network via removable media. Files can be shared over a local area network in an office/at home, the internet e.t.c
TYPES OF FILE SHARING
There are two ways to share files over a network. They are:
1. Directly between two computers
2. Between a computer and a server
1. Directly between two computers: This is when a file is shared between two computers over a network. i.e directly to the other person. This is often called peer to peer (P2P) with no server involved.
2. Between a computer and a server: This is when a file is shared between a computer and a server, the computer uploads the file to a storage area on the server where it can be shared with others.
MEANING OF NETWORK
This is a group of computers connected to each other to a central server in order to share resources such as documents, printers, scanners e.t.c
TYPES OF NETWORK
The major types of network are:
1. Local Area Network (LAN)
2. Wide Area Network (WAN)
3. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
4. Personal Area Network (PAN)
1. Local Area Network (LAN): is a collection of devices connected together in one physical location, such as a building, office, or home.
2. Wide Area Network (WAN): This is a network that exists over a large-scale geographical area. A WAN connects different smaller networks. A bank, including its branch offices and ATM machines, is an example of an organization using a WAN.
3. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): is a computer network that is larger than a single building local area network (LAN) but is located in a single geographic area that is smaller than a wide area network (WAN).
4. Personal Area Network (PAN): This connects electronic devices within a user's immediate area. The size of a PAN ranges from a few centimeters to a few meters.
BENEFITS OF NETWORKING
- 1. Easy File/Data Sharing.
- 2. It enhances communication
- 3. Affordable.
- 4. Increases Cost Efficiency.
- 5. Networking Boosts Storage Capacity.
- 6. It enhances collaboration
- CLASS ACTIVITIES
- 1. Differentiate between file sharing and network.
- 2. P2P stands for _______________________
- 3. List and explain any two (2) types of network
- 4. State three (3) benefits and disadvantages of network.
