SCREEN POINTING DEVICES I & II

MEANING, DESCRIPTION, AND EXAMPLES

MEANING OF SCREEN POINTING DEVICES

Screen pointing devices can be defined as any hardware component that allows the user to input spatial data into the computer using physical gesture such as point, click, and drag.

EXAMPLES OF SCREEN POINTING DEVICES

Common examples of screen pointing devices are:

(a) Mouse

(b) Trackball

(c) Joystick

(d) Pointing Stick

(e) Wii Remote

(f) Finger Tracking

(g) Graphic Tablet

(h) Stylus

(i) Touchpad

(j) Touch Screen

(a) MouseA mouse is a small device that a computer user pushes across a desk surface in order to point to a place on a display screen and to select one or more actions to take from that position.

(b) TrackballA trackball is a computer cursor control device used in many laptop computer keyboards and older versions of computer mice. The device comprises a ball held by a socket containing sensors to detect a rotation of the ball about two axes -- like an upside-down mouse with a ball in it.

(c) Joystick: This is an input device that can be used for controlling the movement of the cursor or a pointer in a computer device.

(d) Pointing Stickis a small analog stick used as a pointing device typically mounted centrally in a computer keyboard.

(e) Wii Remote: This has motion sensing capabilities that allows user to interact with and manipulate items on screen through gestures recognition.

(f) Finger Tracker: The finger tracking system is focused on user-data interaction, where the user interacts with virtual data, by handling through the fingers.

(g) Graphic Tablet: This  is a natural input device that converts information from a handheld stylus. The user uses the stylus like a pen, pencil, or paintbrush, pressing its tip on the tablet surface. The device can also be used in replacement of a computer mouse.

(h) Stylus: A stylus (or stylus pen) is a small pen-shaped instrument whose tip position on a computer monitor can be detected. It is used to draw, or make selections by tapping.

(i) Touchpad: This is also called a glide padglide pointpressure-sensitive tablet, or trackpad, a touchpad is an input device on laptops and some keyboards. It allows the user to move a cursor with their finger. It can be used in place of an external mouse.

(j) Touch Screen:This is an electronic display screen that is also an input device. A user interacts with the computer, tablet, smartphone or touch-controlled appliance by using hand gestures and fingertip movements to tap pictures, moving elements or type words on the screen.

Class Activities
