(MEANING AND TYPES OF NETWORK GROUP)



MEANING OF NETWORK GROUP

Network groups are a means for groups of people with common interest to connect with each other via internet

TYPES OF NETWORK GROUPS

Common types of network groups are:

(a) Mailing List

(b) Newsgroups

(c) Chat Rooms

(i) Mailing List: A mailing list is a collection of names and addresses used by an individual or an organization to send material to multiple recipients. The term is often extended to include the people subscribed to such a list, so the group of subscribers is referred to as "the mailing list", or simply "the list."

Types of Mailing List

There are two types of mailing lists, namely:

(i) Announcement List

(ii) Discussion List

(i) Announcement List : Announcement lists are an easy and cost-effective means of communicating with a large number of people. Also known as one-way lists, announcement lists facilitate communication from authorized senders (usually one or a few editors) to the entire list. This is used primarily as one-way conduct of information and may only be "posted to" by selected people i.e administrator.

(ii) Discussion List: This is a place on the internet where people can write and receive messages in order to share ideas and information about a particular subject.

(b) Newsgroups: A newsgroup is a discussion about a particular subject consisting of notes written to a central internet site and redistributed through Usenet, a worldwide network of news discussion groups. 

(c)  Chatroom: This an online platform that enables users to communicate with each other in real time. Chat rooms are typically hosted on a server with an internet connection, enabling members from around the world to hold conversations. Examples of chatting apps are:

(i) WhatsApp

(ii) Facebook Messenger

(iii) Telegram

(iv) Viber

(v) Wechat

(vi) Skype

(vii) Line

(viii) Signal

(ix) Snapchat

(x) Microsoft Teams

(xi) Zoom

(xii) Discord

1. What are network groups?

2. Differentiate between mailing list and newsgroup.

3. Define chatting and list any five (5) applications that can be used to share information in  a group.
