MEANING AND TYPES - BROADCASTING - TELECOMMUNICATION - DATA NETWORK

MEANING OF ICT

ICT is an acronym that stands for Information and Communication Technology.
Information is referred to knowledge obtained from reading, investigating, studying and researching. It can also be defined as processed data.

Communication is an act of transmitting messages.
Technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry.

It is also defined as the use of a diverse set of technological tools and resources to communicate, create, disseminate, store and manage information.

Communication strategies in ICT

There are two types of communication strategies in ICT:
1. Synchronous communication
This is a communication strategy where all parties involved in the communication need to be present and available at the same time. E.g. online chat, video conferencing, etc.
2. Asynchronous communication
Asynchronous communication does not require that all parties involved need to be present and available at the same time. E.g. Discussion forum, Blogs e-group, etc.

Types of ICT

The following are types of ICT:
1. Broadcasting
2. Telecommunication
3. Data network
4. Information system
5. Satellite communication

6. Cloud Computing

7. Social Media

1.  Broadcasting: Broadcasting is the distribution of audio and video content to a dispersed audience via any electronic mass communication medium. Types of broadcasting include Radio broadcasting, Television broadcasting, Satellite TV system broadcasting and Webcasting.

2. TelecommunicationTelecommunications are the means of electronic transmission of information over distances. The information may be in the form of voice telephone calls, data, text, images, or video. Examples include wired phones, cellphones, microwave communications, fiber optics, satellites, radio and television broadcasting, the internet and telegraphs.

3. Data network : A data network is a system designed to transfer data from one network access point to one other or more network access points via data switching, transmission lines, and system controls. Data networks consist of communication systems such as circuit switches, leased lines, and packet switching networks. Types of data network are: LAN, WAN, PAN, CAN, VPN..e.t.c

4. Information system: An information system (IS) is an interconnected set of components used to collect, store, process and transmit data and digital information. At its core, it is a collection of hardware, software, data, people and processes that work together to transform raw data into useful information.

5. Satellite communication: This is the use of artificial satellites to provide communication links between various points on Earth. Satellite communications play a vital role in the global telecommunications system.

6. Cloud Computingis the delivery of different services through the Internet, including data storage, servers, databases, networking, and software. Cloud storage has grown increasingly popular among individuals who need larger storage space and for businesses seeking an efficient off-site data back-up solution. Examples of cloud storage applications are: Google drive, iCloud, Dropbox, One Drive, jottacloud (for photos) e.t.c

7. Social MediaSocial media is a collective term for websites and applications that focus on communication, community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. People use social media to stay in touch and interact with friends, family and various communities.
