COMPUTER NETWORK
Meaning, Types, Advantages and
Disadvantages
Objective:
i. Define computer network
ii. List and explain the types of
network
iii. State the advantages and
disadvantages of computer network
Definition of Computer Network
1.
A computer network consists of a collection of computers, printers and other
equipment that are connected so that they can communicate with each other.
2. It is also defined as a group of two or more
computer systems linked together.
Types of Network
1.
Personal Area Network (PAN)
2.
Local Area Network (LAN)
3.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
4.
Wide Area Network (WAN)
1.
Personal Area Network (PAN): This connects electronic
devices within a user's immediate area. The size of a PAN ranges from a few centimeters
to a few meters. One of the most common real-world examples of a PAN is the
connection between a Bluetooth earpiece and a smartphone.
2.
Local Area Network (LAN): consists of a series of computers linked together to form a
network in a circumscribed location. The computers in a LAN connect to each other via
TCP/IP ethernet or Wi-Fi. A LAN is normally exclusive to an organization, such
as a school, office, association or church.
3.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): This is a computer network that connects computers within a
metropolitan area, which could be a single large city, multiple cities and
towns, or any given large area with multiple buildings
4. Wide Area Network (WAN): A wide area network (WAN) is a geographically
distributed private telecommunications network that interconnects multiple
local area networks (LANs). A bank, including its branch offices and ATM
machines, is another example of an organization using a WAN.
Advantages of Computer Network
1. Ease of accessibility
2. Flexibility
3. Connectivity
4. Great storage capacity
5. Convenient resource sharing
Disadvantages of Computer Network
1.
Lack of robustness
2.
Spread of computer virus
3.
Implementation issues
4.
Lack of productivity
5.
Health issues
