MEANING AND CLASSES - MECHANICAL, ELECTRONIC AND ELECTRICAL
MEANING OF DEVICES
These are instruments, equipment or machines made to perform specific functions.
CLASSES OF DEVICES
Devices can be classified into three categories. They are:
(i) Mechanical
(ii) Electronic
(iii) Electrical
(i) Mechanical Device: This works on mechanical principles (it utilizes physical moving parts, like gears or levers, to carry out its functions). Examples are: ship,sewing machine, motorcycle, typewriter, wheel barrow, Abacus, slide rule, Napier Bone, Pascaline, analytical Engine by (Charles Babbage) e.t.c.
(ii) Electronic Device : This controls the flow of electrical currents for the purpose of information processing and system control. Examples includes: photocopier, Scoreboard, calculator, radio, camera, television, telephone, and computer.
(iii) Electrical Device: This takes energy of electric currents and transform it in simple ways into some other form of energy. Examples includes: electric iron, electric blender, mixer, electric clipper, fridge, fan, washing machine, grinding machine e.t.c
CLASS ACTIVITIES
1. Differentiate between mechanical and electronic devices and list two (2) examples for each.
